The file name for raw files in Nikon DSLR camera is Nikon Electronic Format files NEF. This mode is preferred by professionals as the image captures all details including meta details like the camera model, lens model, etc., and enable to edit the image before printing. To call it simply, it is a raw file, unlike JPEG file, this NEF file enables to edit and finetune the image. Nikon DSLR camera has the option to shoot in Jpeg mode also.
To view and edit NEF files, one has to down load the software from the Nikon.
I have a MAC,. The version is MAC OS Highsierra 10.13.6. I had taken some, not some many photographs in NEF mode. I have bought a DSLR D5300 camera and used for the first time, when I travelled to North East. I wanted to try my hand on fine tuning the NEF image and to save as JPEG files.
It is not easy to download. The software called View NX, I downloaded from Nikon site did not open the file. Then I called up the online number of Nikon and googled for a while. Then I got the information that the software compatabile with the software OS Highsierra version 10.13.6 is View NX-I & Capture NX-D.
I uninstalled the version View NX-II and downloaded and installed View NX-I & Capture NX-D. After installation, I was able to open the images and edit the images.
I find the software awesome and existing. It was easy to use with the Nikon tutorial.
I should pointout the mistake I made. What I did was I removed the memory card and inserted the card in my Mac and started copying. It showed error message. Only then, I googled and found out you have to extract the files with the cord supplied along with the camera. Since, I did not do so some images got corrupted. Now I can view the images with View NX-I but I am unable to covert to Jpeg image. NEF files take lot of storage space. This is to caution, anyone trying to copy or transfer image, please connect the camera to the computer with the cord supplied along with the DSLR camera.
In this lockdown mode, it gave me a feeling of spending the time wisely.
